Leave of Absence...

You've probably realized nothing has been happening here for awhile. My life is too busy and stressful right now, so I find a "leave of absence" necessary. Please keep my grandma V. in your prayers as she has been sick from her chemo and has been in the hospital the past few days. It is not serious at this point, but obviously the chemo is really wearing her out. She appreciates all the prayers very much! Thank you!

¿Quiere aprender Español?

This summer God has blessed me with an opportunity to travel to Chile for six weeks to a new Catholic "immersion" school. For six weeks I am supposed to speak pretty much only Spanish so that I can (hopefully) obtain fluency or at least very close to it. I really believe that I should do my best to learn this language (especially with my desire to be a priest one day) as there are so many people in our country today that will benefit from having someone that can reach out to them without a language barrier. The leader of this school has given me an opportunity to raise a little mula if through my advertising efforts an individual signs up to go to this school. So therefore, I am asking that if you yourself do not think God could be calling you to something this radical, perhaps you know someone who could benefit from this, or could even advertise in a local youth group or Catholic college. This IS a Catholic school, so they would have to be willing to participate in Catholic activities etc.. If you are willing to help out a little, I would greatly appreciate it! The next programs are coming up soon with the following dates:

OCTOBER 20th-NOVEMBER 29th, 2008

DECEMBER 10th-JANUARY 13th, 2009 (winter break program)

Stump the Chump Answer....

This week's question comes from Eva: "Should we hate the devil?"

My Answer:

Well, honestly this is a very tricky question. First, though I wish to turn your question around a little. Before we think about whether we should hate the Devil, maybe we should think about whether we should have love for him. That probably sounds strange, but some people question this as Jesus tells us we should love all people, even our enemies: "But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust." (Matthew 5:44-45)

Obviously the Devil is our enemy and he persecutes us, so is Jesus implying that we should love him and pray for him? Now before I answer that question, I wish to share these inserts from the Catechism: "Scripture speaks of a sin of these angels. This "fall" consists in the free choice of these created spirits who radically and irrevocably rejected God and his reign...[#392] It is the irrevocable character of their choice, and not a defect in the infinite divine mercy, that makes the angels' sin unforgivable. 'There is no repentance for the angels after their fall, just as there is no repentance for men after death.' (St. John Damascen, De Fide orth.) [#393]

So this is saying that the Devil (and demons) has already decided what his will is, and he CANNOT change that. He has rejected God forever. Period. Now let's go back to the question above of whether we should love and pray for the Devil. How can we pray for the devil when he will not change? We can pray for God's protection from him, but praying for the Devil will not do any good as Satan has forever rejected God's grace. How about loving him? As I wrote about earlier when I was questioned about God's love for the souls in Hell, I stated how God's love simply cannot be given to the damned souls as they have rejected God and therefore His love. The same would be applied to the Devil. The Devil cannot receive God's love, because God IS love (1 John 4:16), and since the Devil has rejected God, he has rejected His love which is inseparable. We are to be imitators of Christ and His love, but it is impossible to love the Devil as a Christian as the Devil has rejected God and his love forever. Our 'love' for the Devil would do no good.

But then you didn't ask whether we should love the Devil, but whether we should "hate" the Devil. Now this is where it gets really tricky. Does God "hate" the Devil? Should we hate the Devil? I think we need to define the word hate first before going further. Hate can mean to "wish evil or death on someone" or it can simply be "to detest". The Church clearly condemns "hatred", but renunciation of sin (evil) is simply what every Christian must do. At a baptism, the candidate or sponsor is asked: "do you renounce Satan?... And all of his works?" to which the reply is, "I do renounce him.". When we equate or define hatred as "renunciation" and "detestation" then I think it is safe to say that we should indeed "hate" the devil. As Christians, we should never hold hatred which is a desire or wish for evil upon someone, but we should always seek after love as Christ taught us. Hatred of this latter kind is evil, and although this sounds funny we should really "hate" (despise) that kind of hatred. Unfortunately languages are limited and words can have broad meanings, thus making words like "hate" quite difficult to define. As the Holy Scriptures say: "The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate." (Proverbs 8:13)

The Bible uses this word hate in other references where I believe the definition is clearly "to despise" and not the kind of hatred which is a desire for evil. Look up Psalm 5:4-6 and Luke 14:26 to see further what I mean.

To sum it up: "Should we hate the Devil?"

If you are defining "hate" as "despising" or "renouncing" then the answer is yes. As for "wishing evil", this kind of hate should simply not be apart of a Christian as it is not of God. I hope that answered it pretty well.

THE EUCHARIST UNITES US OVER AND ABOVE ALL DIFFERENCES

VATICAN CITY, 22 MAY 2008 (VIS) - At 7 p.m. today, Solemnity of Corpus Christi, Benedict XVI celebrated Mass on the square in front of Rome's Basilica of St. John Lateran, then presided at the Eucharistic procession to the Basilica of St. Mary Major.

In his homily, the Pope spoke of the significance of today's Solemnity through the three fundamental gestures of the celebration. Firstly "our coming together around the altar of the Lord to be together in His presence", secondly "the procession, walking with the Lord", and finally "kneeling before the Lord in adoration".

Explaining the first of these gestures, the Holy Father quoted St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians, where it is written that "there is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus'. ... In these words", said the Pope, "we feel the truth and the power of the Christian revolution, the most profound revolution in human history, which we may experience in the Eucharist where people of different ages, sexes, social conditions and political ideas come together in the presence of the Lord. The Eucharist can never be a private matter. ... The Eucharist is public worship, which has nothing esoteric or exclusive about it. ... We remain united, over and above our differences, ... we open to one another in order to become a single thing in Him".

Concerning the second of these gestures, that of "walking with the Lord", Benedict XVI affirmed that "with the gift of Himself in the Eucharist, the Lord Jesus ... raises us up again ... and puts us on the journey with the power of this Bread of life. ... The procession of Corpus Christi teaches us that the Eucharist wants to free us from all distress and discomfort ... so that we can resume the journey with the strength God gives us in Jesus Christ".

"Without the God-with-us, the God Who is near, how can we sustain the pilgrimage of life, either individually or as a society or a family of peoples?" asked the Pope. "The Eucharist is the Sacrament of the God Who does not leave us to journey alone, but puts Himself at our side and shows us the way. Indeed, it is not enough to keep going, it is important to see where we are going! Progress is not enough if there are no criteria of reference".

Finally, the third element of Corpus Christi, that of "kneeling in adoration before the Lord", is "the most valuable and radical remedy against the idolatries of yesterday and today, ... it is a profession of freedom: those who bow to Jesus cannot and must not prostrate themselves before any earthly power, however strong", said the Pope.

As Christians "we prostrate ourselves before God, Who first bowed down towards man ... to save him and give him life, Who knelt before us to wash our dirty feet. Adoring the Body of Christ means believing that there, in that piece of bread, Christ is truly present and gives real meaning to life, to the vast universe as to the smallest of creatures, to the whole of human history as to the briefest of lives".

Following Mass, the Pope presided at a Eucharistic procession that passed along Rome's Via Merulana to the Basilica of St. Mary Major. Along the way, thousands of faithful prayed and sang, accompanying the Blessed Sacrament. An open vehicle transported the Sacrament in a mostrance, before which the Holy Father prayed.

Yes, I'll say it again.... I'm sorry for not blogging in such a long time. I do have some good excuses I'll try to use though:

I am graduating tomorrow May 17th!!! I have been working to finish up school, though I'll still be doing some more after graduation (isn't that depressing or what???)---what?---I'm homeschooled. I can get away with stuff like that.

I will continue the blogging soon, but please be patient. The Stump the Chump question will be answered by this Thursday...

Stump the Chump Answer....

This week Joey asked the Stump the Chump question:

"If God loves everyone, does he even have love for souls in hell?"

My Answer:

Wow. Good question! You have almost stumped me on this one. First of all though we have to work with what God's Love is really all about. Does God love everyone? If so, it would reason his love would extend to the souls in Hell.

We read in 1 John 4:16, " We have come to know and believe in the love God has for us. God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him." (emphasis added) I will talk about this verse in a second, but first also look at this one:

"For thou art not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not sojourn with thee. The boastful may not stand before thy eyes; thou hatest all evildoers. Thou destroyest those who speak lies; the Lord abhors bloodthirsty and deceitful men." (Psalm 5:4-6 emphasis added)

"Hate" is a pretty "hard-cord" word these days, yet this is the word that the psalmist uses. At the same time we have the passage in 1 John saying that "God is love". So if God is love then how can He hate? Before I answer these questions let's look at one more section of Scripture:

"[Jesus] If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple." (Luke 14:26)

Here again we see the use of the word "hate". Now, I wish I knew some Hebrew (for the psalm at least), because only going back to the original text and *context* can you begin to extract the original meaning. Now, I think the context issue is very important for the last verse that I gave you where Jesus tells us that we must "hate" everyone close to us to be worthy of Him. Now this makes absolutely no sense if Jesus is telling us to actually hate in the sense of "desiring evil for someone" or "wishing death" to someone. That makes no sense since Jesus clearly states many times about how we must have love for all people and that loving our neighbor is the second most important commandment in the world. I believe the word "hate" in Jesus' context is meaning "to detest", in the sense of: "you can't love (hold on to) your mom (or whoever) more than me, so that you would do what she wanted you to do and not what I (Jesus) wanted you to do". We must deny ourselves and place God first. That's what I believe Jesus is telling us there. I think the same context can be applied to the psalm. God detests evildoers makes a whole lot of sense. Obviously those who don't follow Him will not be supported or helped by Him, which brings us back to our first verse in 1 John.

"...whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him." This begins to make sense when we come to understand an important principle with how God's Love works. Love is a two way road. I can love someone who hates me, but they will not be able to receive my love because of their hatred for me. They won't give a care if I love them, and they want nothing to do with me, so how can my love do anything for them until they allow themselves to be open? Of course as a Christian I must love everyone, but if someone really hates me my love will not do them any good (excluding the good example etc.), though I would benefit from it. God's love is the same principle. If someone loves God, God's love can pour into their lives, because remember that "God is love". To receive God is the same as to receive love. When we reject God, we are the ones who are rejecting His love. God's love cannot enter if we reject God because again "God is love". So many times people desire to receive God's love, and yet they want nothing to do with God. You can only have all or nothing, there is no in between. So in the psalm where it says God "hates evildoers", it stands to reason that He is not able to give His love to them because they have rejected His gift of love. If they repented of their sin, His love would be able to be given.

"...does he even have love for souls in hell?"

Let's talk about Hell. Hell is not a place where God has fun eternally torturing those who didn't like Him. Hell is simply the place where one is utterly separated from God and His Grace. I like to think of how eternity begins now. Right now, this second we are all either living for God or against Him. We show this through how we live. Jesus said "You are my friends if you do what I command you." (John 15:14) There you have it. Many people have no desire to follow Christ and His ways. These people have rejected God. No one will be dragged off "kicking and screaming" into Hell. Remember that Hell is the place totally separated from God and His love, so therefore Heaven is the place totally filled with God and His love. Those who have chosen to reject God would suffer much more in Heaven, as they could not stand being in His presence. Therefore they would willingly go to Hell, even though Hell is certainly no fun place to be. It is a place of eternal suffering as living without God's love can only be torture and imprisonment. Of course, the Devil will try to paint a pretty picture of sin for us on Earth. Just remember he's on the campaign trail today. So that should answer your question. God is love, but His love can only be received by those who really desire it. Those souls who have chosen to reject God and are now in Hell, have rejected His love, and because our God is a loving God He will not force them to receive His gifts.

Prayers for my Grandma V.
Any prayers you guys could give for my grandma "V." would be very much appreciated. She has recently been put back on Chemo-Therapy after several years of her breast cancer being steady, as the cancer numbers have been going up for the past several months. I visited her today and she is not doing well. She is so weak and sick she can't really get out of bed. She suffers many other health issues as well. She has Scleroderma (a tissue disease), borderline diabetes, bad arthritis, some nerve problems in her feet, sleep apnea, and can easily suffer from depression as well. Also, recently she has some sore on her arm which has given her a lot of pain. Praise the Lord she is a good Catholic, but please pray that she would stay close to Jesus through her suffering which she endures 24/7. After her last chemo treatment a few days ago, she could barely talk as she was so out of energy. It almost seems like the chemo will kill her quicker than the cancer! Please pray for her and for our family who is taking care of her. Thank you, and I will pray for you all as well!

Dante’s Insights Into Love and Sin

Dante Alighieri follows his Inferno from the Divine Comedy with The Purgatorio. This second installment brings about some very strong insights into the human person and soul just as the Inferno did. As Dante has now reached closer to Heaven, Purgatory, we are able to glimpse at the root causes of the vices, which if continued would’ve led to the souls’ damnation as witnessed in the Inferno. In Purgatory the souls make reparation for their sins which are now seen clearly as evil and not as the superficial beauty they deceptively held while on earth. It seems that all of the sins can be placed in one of three categories: corrupt love, not enough love, or impure love.
The lowest three levels of Purgatory contain those souls who need purifying from sins caused by corrupt forms of love. The first of these levels holds the prideful. The vice of pride, according to Christian Tradition, is ultimately the source of all sin. Pride is a corrupt form of love as it places love of oneself or of one’s own accomplishments over love of God and neighbor. This distorted love leads many to deceive themselves of their own greatness and to find their value in relation with themselves or their power and not in relationship with God. In reparation for this sin the guilty souls have to carry an enormous boulder on their shoulders. The boulder is made in size according to the amount of pride they had while on earth. The second level contains those souls who were guilty of the sin of envy. Envy is a corrupt form of love as it possesses only love for oneself and one’s own wellbeing, and has no desire that others should be well off. Instead of being envious of other people, one should be thankful and joyful that they are blessed as this is what true love is. In punishment, the envious souls have their eyes wired shut. In their lives on earth they used their eyes to lead them into sin, and so now they must suffer blindness in reparation. The final level within the “corrupt love” category is for the wrathful. The wrathful have given into so much anger that they are blind to reason and to love. Although Jesus commands us to love our neighbor and to do unto others as we would have them to do unto us, the soul filled with wrath is self-consumed and refuses to reason through love or Christian reasoning. In penance for their sin, these souls are subjected to living in a smoky environment which is blinding. Just as these souls were filled with wrath which blinded them from love and reason, they now suffer from blindness.
The second category in Purgatory is for the souls who did not possess enough love. There is only one level in this category, and it is for the purification of the slothful. The slothful have not committed something wrong, rather they have omitted from doing what is right. They have chosen to do what is most easy and not to do what is right (even though they have not committed something wrong). Their irresponsibility and lack of love for God and neighbor is now punished in Purgatory through the souls having to run quickly and constantly. Although Dante is normally able to talk to the different souls at the various places in Purgatory, the souls here have no time to stop and chat. Only one shade takes advantage of an opportunity by shouting as he passes by. In life they wasted their time, and so now in Purgatory they must waste no time in their purification.
The final category in Purgatory is for those souls whose love was impure. This category is divided into three levels. The first of these levels is for the souls guilty of the sin of avarice. The souls who have given into this vice that is caused from impure love have either hoarded possessions or have seriously wasted their possessions without reason . Although the desire for those things which sustain man (i.e. clothing, shelter, enough money) are completely fine and natural, the inordinate love of these things is wrong and “impure” as it impedes others from having what is needed and it replaces love for God. The souls who have sinned in this way are punished in Purgatory through possessing nothing whatsoever and being crowded together so as to not even possess their own space. The next level is for the gluttonous. These souls, have placed a love of their appetites and tastes above reason and natural law, and thus they are filled with an immoderate and impure love for what is carnal. They have placed their love of food above their love of God, their neighbor, and themselves. These souls now suffer to eat no food and to have their bodies in a wretched decaying state with their mouths as a gaping wound. The final level in Purgatory is for the souls who have committed sins of lust. Through lust these souls have distorted natural and appropriate love of neighbor by worshiping sensual pleasures and rejecting true charity. Lust is a great perversion of love as it only is concerned with itself and not for anyone or anything else. These lustful souls now must endure a burning cleansing fire which will not consume them, but which continually inflicts it’s burning painful sensation.
Dante’s Purgatorio has given us magnificent insights into the human soul and how love can be expressed. His idea that all sin is derived from corrupt, impure, or lack of love is really quite astounding. When we look closely at it, it seems that Dante really has visited Purgatory and come back to share with us his amazing wisdom. Perhaps this is why Jesus prayed to His Heavenly Father: “I made known to them your name and I will make it known, that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them.” (John 17:26)

Fr. Corapi Fan Club

Fr. John Corapi has been a favorite speaker of mine for quite some time now. He has delivered many messages which are so relevant in today's confused and lost world. I would really encourage EVERYONE to purchase just one of his cds or listen to one of his talks on EWTN sometime and see for yourself what I am talking about. He never ceases to inspire me! "This Saying is Hard; Who can Accept It?"---Part II

Why are Non-Catholics Excluded from Receiving the Eucharist?

Many people do not seem to understand the Church's teaching that non-Catholics (except in extremely rare cases) are not eligible to receive Holy Communion. Why are some Catholic politicians denied Communion because of their political views? Doesn't this seem unfair and like the Church is getting too personal and overly controlling? I wish to answer how in fact the Catholic Church is not "too personal" or "overly controlling", and the reasons why there are rules for the reception of the Holy Eucharist.

Let's look first in the Holy Scriptures where we read St. Paul talking to the Corinthians about the Eucharist: "Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord. A person should examine himself, and so eat the bread and drink the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself." (1 Corinthians 11:27-29)
St. Paul uses very strong language by today's standards, and these truths are just as true today as they were when he spoke them. The Eucharist has not changed. So now let's see and compare that to what the Church says regarding the reception of Communion.

"To receive Holy Communion one must be fully incorporated into the Catholic Church and be in the state of grace, that is, not conscious of being in mortal sin. Anyone who is conscious of having committed a grave sin must first receive the sacrament of Reconciliation before going to Communion. Also important for those receiving Holy Communion are a spirit of recollection and prayer, observance of the fast prescribed by the Church, and an appropriate disposition of the body (gestures and dress) as a sign of respect for Christ." (Compendium of the Catholic Church #291 emphasis added)

You should have been able to catch those parallels between what St. Paul said and what the Church stated. Really, the Church has simply given further clarification into what St. Paul was saying. Simple logic can help us to understand why this is so important. And again it boils down to Faith on what Jesus said. If Jesus really said that the Eucharist is His REAL Body and Blood, then who are we to think we are worthy to receive It? Obviously, no matter how "holy" we are, while on Earth we are never "worthy" enough, but we must be at least in a state of Grace (life with Christ, free from mortal sin) before we can dare approach to receive Him. If we have no life with Christ, how can Christ live in or enter into us?

This then gives a very simple explanation as to why some so called "Catholic" individuals (e.g. politicians) have been refused Holy Communion because of their stance on political issues or other things. Probably the most popular example would be a politician who supported abortion being denied Holy Communion---why is this? To support abortion, which is murder, is to commit a serious sin, and therefore, as this is also publically known, the Church has the right to refuse Holy Communion. The Church is doing these people a huge favor in reality, as she is preventing these individuals from committing sins of sacrilege against our Lord's Body. Receiving the Lord in mortal sin, is itself a mortal sin. So, the Church lays this out clearly so that we can know what St. Paul means by "discerning" and how we can live an authentic and living relationship with Jesus Christ, and not a fake, self-centered, "warm and fuzzy", superficial relationship. Jesus never promised that following Him would be easy, in fact quite the contrary, but we do know that it will be the only way to true fulfilment and lasting happiness.

RELIGION, AN INSPIRATION AND DRIVING FORCE IN U.S. HISTORY

VATICAN CITY, 16 APR 2008 (VIS) - Shortly before 10.30 a.m. local time today, Benedict XVI arrived at the White House, official residence of U.S. President George W. Bush who, together with his wife Laura, was on hand to welcome the Pontiff.

The Pope, who celebrates his 81st birthday today, delivered an address from a podium on the South Lawn of the White House. Among those present, apart from the civil and political authorities, were U.S. cardinals, the Presidium of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), the auxiliary bishops of Washington, and the bishop of Arlington within whose diocese is the cemetery in which thousands of U.S. servicemen and various presidents are buried. The ceremony was attended by a total of around 5,000 people.

Having expressed his appreciation for President Bush's invitation "to visit this great country", the Holy Father recalled how his journey coincides with the 200th anniversary of the elevation of the country's first Catholic diocese, Baltimore, to a metropolitan archdiocese. He went on: "I am happy to be here as a guest of all Americans. I come as a friend, a preacher of the Gospel and one with great respect for this vast pluralistic society.

"America's Catholics", he added, "have made, and continue to make, an excellent contribution to the life of their country. ... I trust that my presence will be a source of renewal and hope for the Church in the United States, and strengthen the resolve of Catholics to contribute ever more responsibly to the life of this nation.

"From the dawn of the Republic, America's quest for freedom has been guided by the conviction that the principles governing political and social life are intimately linked to a moral order based on the dominion of God the Creator". In the process which forged the soul of the nation, "religious beliefs were a constant inspiration and driving force, as for example in the struggle against slavery and in the civil rights movement. In our time too, particularly in moments of crisis, Americans continue to find their strength in a commitment to this patrimony of shared ideals and aspirations".

Referring to the many religious traditions present in the United States, Benedict XVI recalled how "not only Catholics, but all believers have found here the freedom to worship God in accordance with the dictates of their conscience, while at the same time being accepted as part of a commonwealth in which each individual and group can make its voice heard".

He continued: "As the nation faces the increasingly complex political and ethical issues of our time, I am confident that the American people will find in their religious beliefs a precious source of insight and an inspiration to pursue reasoned, responsible and respectful dialogue in the effort to build a more humane and free society.

"Freedom is not only a gift, but also a summons to personal responsibility. Americans know this from experience - almost every town in this country has its monuments honouring those who sacrificed their lives in defence of freedom, both at home and abroad. The preservation of freedom calls for the cultivation of virtue, self-discipline, sacrifice for the common good and a sense of responsibility towards the less fortunate. It also demands the courage to engage in civic life and to bring one's deepest beliefs and values to reasoned public debate".

"The Church, for her part, wishes to contribute to building a world ever more worthy of the human person", said the Holy Father, because "she is convinced that faith sheds new light on all things" and gives us "the hope that inspires us to work for an ever more just and fraternal society. Democracy can only flourish", he added, "when political leaders and those whom they represent are guided by truth and bring the wisdom born of firm moral principle to decisions affecting the life and future of the nation.

"For well over a century, the United States of America has played an important role in the international community", the Pope concluded, noting how "America has traditionally shown herself generous in meeting immediate human needs, fostering development and offering relief to the victims of natural catastrophes. I am confident that this concern for the greater human family will continue to find expression in support for the patient efforts of international diplomacy to resolve conflicts and promote progress".

The welcome ceremony over, the Pope held a private meeting with President Bush in the Oval Office. He them travelled back to the apostolic nunciature in Washington where he lunched with U.S. cardinals and the Presidium of the USCCB. Later, also in the apostolic nunciature, he received leaders of five charitable organisations: the Knights of Columbus, the Patrons of the Arts, Centesimus Annus Pro Pontefice, the Papal Foundation and the Franciscan Foundation for the Holy Land.

"President Bush, on behalf of all Americans, welcomed the Holy Father, wished him a happy birthday, and thanked him for the spiritual and moral guidance, which he offers to the whole human family. The President wished the Pope every success in his apostolic journey and in his address at the United Nations, and expressed appreciation for the Pope's upcoming visit to 'Ground Zero' in New York.

"During their meeting, the Holy Father and the President discussed a number of topics of common interest to the Holy See and the United States of America, including moral and religious considerations to which both parties are committed: the respect of the dignity of the human person; the defence and promotion of life, matrimony and the family; the education of future generations; human rights and religious freedom; sustainable development and the struggle against poverty and pandemics, especially in Africa. In regard to the latter, the Holy Father welcomed the United States' substantial financial contributions in this area. The two reaffirmed their total rejection of terrorism as well as the manipulation of religion to justify immoral and violent acts against innocents. They further touched on the need to confront terrorism with appropriate means that respect the human person and his or her rights.

"The Holy Father and the President devoted considerable time in their discussions to the Middle East, in particular resolving the Israel-Palestinian conflict in line with the vision of two States living side-by-side in peace and security, their mutual support for the sovereignty and independence of Lebanon, and their common concern for the situation in Iraq and particularly the precarious state of Christian communities there and elsewhere in the region. MEETING WITH BISHOPS: LIVE CHRIST-CENTRED LIVES

VATICAN CITY, 16 APR 2008 (VIS) - At 5.45 p.m. local time (11.45 p.m. in Rome), the Holy Father presided at the celebration of Vespers with bishops of the United States at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C.

At the beginning of his homily, the Holy Father highlighted the American people's "great vitality and creativity" and their generosity towards the poor and needy, which also finds expression in "the many forms of humanitarian assistance provided by American Catholics through Catholic Charities and other agencies".

"America is also a land of great faith" said the Pope, noting how its people are well-known for "their religious fervour" and "do not hesitate to bring moral arguments rooted in biblical faith into their public discourse". At the same time, "respect for freedom of religion is deeply ingrained in the American consciousness".

"People today need to be reminded of the ultimate purpose of their lives", said Pope Benedict. "Without God ... our lives are ultimately empty. ... The goal of all our pastoral and catechetical work, the object of our preaching, and the focus of our sacramental ministry should be to help people establish and nurture that living relationship with 'Christ Jesus, our hope'".

He went on: "At a time when advances in medical science bring new hope to many, they also give rise to previously unimagined ethical challenges. This makes it more important than ever to offer thorough formation in the Church's moral teaching to Catholics engaged in healthcare". In this context he told the bishops that "yours is a respected voice that has much to offer to the discussion of the pressing social and moral questions of the day. ... It falls to you to ensure that the moral formation provided at every level of ecclesial life reflects the authentic teaching of the Gospel of life".

In this regard, the Pope identified a "matter of deep concern to us all" as being "the state of the family within society. ... Divorce and infidelity have increased, and many young men and women are choosing to postpone marriage or to forego it altogether". At the same time there exists "an alarming decrease in the number of Catholic marriages in the United States together with an increase in cohabitation, in which the Christ-like mutual self-giving of spouses, sealed by a public promise to live out the demands of an indissoluble lifelong commitment, is simply absent".

"It is your task to proclaim boldly the arguments from faith and reason in favour of the institution of marriage, understood as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman, open to the transmission of life. This message should resonate with people today, because it is essentially an unconditional and unreserved 'yes' to life, a 'yes' to love, and a 'yes' to the aspirations at the heart of our common humanity, as we strive to fulfil our deep yearning for intimacy with others and with the Lord.

"Among the countersigns to the Gospel of life", the Pope added, "found in America and elsewhere, is one that causes deep shame: the sexual abuse of minors" by the clergy. "It is your God-given responsibility as pastors to bind up the wounds caused by every breach of trust, to foster healing, to promote reconciliation and to reach out with loving concern to those so seriously wronged".

"While it must be remembered that the overwhelming majority of clergy and religious in America do outstanding work in bringing the liberating message of the Gospel to the people entrusted to their care, it is vitally important that the vulnerable always be shielded from those who would cause harm".

Children, said the Holy Father, "have a right to be educated in authentic moral values rooted in the dignity of the human person. ... We need to reassess urgently the values underpinning society, so that a sound moral formation can be offered to young people and adults alike. ...Indeed, every member of society can contribute to this moral renewal and benefit from it".

Turning his attention to priests, the Pope highlighted the fact that they too "need your guidance and closeness during this difficult time. ... At this stage a vital part of your task is to strengthen relationships with your clergy, especially in those cases where tension has arisen between priests and their bishops in the wake of the crisis. It is important that you continue to show them your concern, to support them, and to lead by example".

"We need to rediscover the joy of living a Christ-centred life, cultivating the virtues and immersing ourselves in prayer", the Pope concluded his homily. "Time spent in prayer is never wasted, however urgent the duties that press upon us from every side".

During the course of his meeting with the U.S. prelates, three bishops posed questions to the Holy Father.

In the first question, the Holy Father was asked to give his assessment of the challenges of secularism and relativism, and his advice on how to confront these challenges more effectively.

"Perhaps", he replied, "America's brand of secularism poses a particular problem: it allows for professing belief in God, and respects the public role of religion and the Churches, but at the same time it can subtly reduce religious belief to a lowest common denominator. Faith becomes a passive acceptance that certain things 'out there' are true, but without practical relevance for everyday life. The result is a growing separation of faith from life. ... This is aggravated by an individualistic and eclectic approach to faith and religion: far from a Catholic approach to 'thinking with the Church', each person believes he or she has a right to pick and choose".

"What is needed, I am convinced, is a greater sense of the intrinsic relationship between the Gospel and the natural law on the one hand, and, on the other, the pursuit of authentic human good, as embodied in civil law and in personal moral decisions. In a society that rightly values personal liberty, ... the Gospel has to be preached and taught as an integral way of life, offering an attractive and true answer, intellectually and practically, to real human problems. ... I believe that the Church in America, at this point in her history, is faced with the challenge of recapturing the Catholic vision of reality and presenting it, in an engaging and imaginative way, to a society which markets any number of recipes for human fulfilment".

The second question put to the Pope concerned Catholics' abandonment of the practice of the faith, sometimes by an explicit decision, but often by distancing themselves quietly and gradually from attendance at Mass and identification with the Church.

"It is becoming more and more difficult, in our Western societies, to speak in a meaningful way of 'salvation'", said Benedict XVI. "Yet salvation - deliverance from the reality of evil, and the gift of new life and freedom in Christ - is at the heart of the Gospel. We need to discover, as I have suggested, new and engaging ways of proclaiming this message. ... It is in the Church's liturgy, and above all in the Sacrament of the Eucharist, that these realities are most powerfully expressed and lived in the life of believers; perhaps we still have much to do in realising the Council's vision of the liturgy as the exercise of the common priesthood and the impetus for a fruitful apostolate in the world".

Finally, answering a question on the decline in vocations, Pope Benedict recalled how "the ability to cultivate vocations to the priesthood and the religious life is a sure sign of the health of a local Church" and he reaffirmed the importance of prayer. "Nor am I speaking only of prayer for vocations", he added. "Prayer itself, born in Catholic families, nurtured by programs of Christian formation, strengthened by the grace of the Sacraments, is the first means by which we come to know the Lord's will for our lives".

Before concluding the Pope also acknowledged "the immense suffering endured by the people of God in the archdiocese of New Orleans as a result of Hurricane Katrina, as well as their courage in the challenging work of rebuilding". He also presented Archbishop Alfred Hughes of New Orleans with a chalice, "as a sign of my prayerful solidarity with the faithful of the archdiocese".

PAEDOPHILIA IS INCOMPATIBLE WITH THE PRIESTHOOD

VATICAN CITY, 15 APR 2008 (VIS) - During a meeting with journalists accompanying him on the flight to the U.S.A., where he arrived at 4 p.m. local time (10 p.m. in Rome), the Pope answered a number of questions.

Referring to the case of paedophile priests that has affected the Catholic Church in America, Benedict XVI said: "I am deeply ashamed. We will do everything possible to ensure it does not happen again".

"We will rigorously exclude paedophiles from priestly ministry", he said. "The two things are absolutely incompatible and someone who is truly guilty of paedophilia cannot be a priest".

"Only healthy people, ... only people with a profound personal life in Christ and who also have a profound sacramental life can be admitted to the priesthood ... It is more important to have good priests than to have many priests". We hope, he insisted, "to do everything possible in the future to heal this wound".

Going on to speak about his forthcoming visit to U.N. headquarters, on the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Pope said: "It seems important to me that the foundation of the United Nations should be the idea of human rights, of rights which express non-negotiable values, which come before all institutions and are the foundation of all institutions".

"It is important", the Pope went on, "to renew the awareness that the United Nations, with its peace-bringing role, can work only if it has a shared basis of values, which are expressed as 'rights' and must be observed by everyone. To confirm this fundamental concept and as far as possible bring it up to date is one aim of my mission".

Asked whether the public recognition of religion in the United States could be a model for secularised Europe, Benedict XVI recalled how the U.S. "began with a positive concept of laicism", but that the laicism of the State existed "precisely for love of religion in all its authenticity, which can only be lived in freedom. ... Of course", he concluded, "in Europe we cannot just copy the United States. We have our own history. But we must learn from one another".

At 10.10 a.m. local time (4.10 p.m. in Rome) Benedict XVI will travel by car to the White House for the welcome ceremony, during which he is scheduled to deliver an address and, subsequently, to hold a private meeting with U.S. President George Bush.

The Holy Father will lunch with American cardinals and with the president, vice-president and secretary general of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), respectively Cardinal Francis E. George O.M.I., Bishop Gerald Kicanas and Msgr. David Malloy. At 4.45 p.m. local time (10.45 p.m. in Rome) he will meet with leaders of five charitable organisations: the Knights of Columbus, the Patrons of the Arts, Centesimus Annus Pro Pontefice, the Papal Foundation and the Franciscan Foundation for the Holy Land.

His Holliness is Coming to Town!!!

POPE CALLS FOR PRAYERS FOR SUCCESS OF HIS U.S. TRIP

VATICAN CITY, 13 APR 2008 (VIS) - At midday today, following the Regina Coeli prayer, Benedict XVI reminded the thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square that on Tuesday 15 April he will travel to the U.S.A. where he will visit Washington, New York and the headquarters of the United Nations.

"With the various groups I shall meet", he said in English, "my intention is to share our Lord's word of life. In Christ is our hope! Christ is the foundation of our hope for peace, for justice, and for the freedom that flows from God's law fulfilled in His commandment to love one another".

The Pope also asked people to pray for the success of the visit, "so that it may be a time of spiritual renewal for all Americans".

Vocation Update...

This past weekend I was up at the Denver vocation's office for my final interviews for acceptance into the diocese of Denver. The vocation's board decided that I need more experiences in the world and to mature more before entering official seminary and suggested I enter a Catholic University for a couple of years first, and then to re-apply. I'm currently applying for Ave Maria Univeristy, and hope to enter their Pre-Theologate program, and then after two years I will return to Denver and enter St. John Vianney Seminary, assuming I am accepted. Please pray for me during this time as this is not what I was expecting or desiring, but I know that this is the best plan as I am sure this is from the Holy Spirit and God's Holy Will.

Stump the Chump Answers...

This week I received two stump the chump questions, so here I go!

First:

Soutenus asked:

"I do not know if we can really know the answer to this one -- maybe I just want another's opinion. Why did Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead? Some priests (in homilies) have said it showed Jesus' humanity -- that He was sad about the death of Lazarus. But, what I do not get is -- if Jesus was going to make eternal life possible -- why bring Lazarus back to his earthly life. Won't life in Heaven be so much better? Was it a miracle to prefigure the resurrection He would have? Kind of like a prelude to His death and resurrection? Was Jesus maybe showing people that He had power over death? If it was simply that then why did Jesus weep?

My answer:

There are a large number of points in this Gospel story, and I don't think that I have grasped half of them, but I think a couple major points can answer your question. Of course, God is all-knowing (UN-like me) so only He can really know every "why" to what He does. I think that the main reason Jesus rose Lazarus from the dead was to show to the Jewish people that He really was the Messiah and that He had power even over death itself. He was not just a prophet or "good man", but He was (and is) God Himself. I'm not just saying this as a pure guess either. Read in the story: "When Jesus heard this he said, 'This illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.' (John 11:4)

And then later: "So then Jesus said to them clearly, 'Lazarus has died. And I am glad for you that I was not there, that you may believe. Le us go to him'" (John 11:14-15)

And: "And Jesus raised his eyes and said, 'Father, I thank you for hearing me. I know that you always hear me; but because of the crowd here I have said this, that they may believe that you sent me.' And when he had said this, he cried out in a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!'" (John 11:41b-43)

You do bring a good point asking why Jesus would raise Lazarus back to life when eternal life seems like it would be WAY better, and it is, but Jesus obviously had a bigger picture here. He knew that Lazarus was a holy man and would still be able to obtain eternal life, but Lazarus' resurrection was a huge sign for the increase of Faith among the other people. If you read ahead in John a little bit you will find this interesting verse: "And the chief priests plotted to kill Lazarus too, because many of the Jews were turning away and believing in Jesus because of him." (John 12:10)

Jesus' humanity is also expressed in this narrative, but I don't think that this is the underlying reason for His actions. I think He expresses His humanity beautifully to us when it says: "When Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who had come with her weeping, he became perturbed and deeply troubled, and said, 'Where have you laid him?' They said to him, 'Sir, come and see.' And Jesus wept. So the Jews said, ' See how he loved him.'" (John 11:33-36)

So yes, His humanity is shown, but I really don't think this can in any way give us the full reason behind Him raising Lazarus. As the first verse I gave you said, Lazarus' death was already known by Jesus, and Jesus knew that He would raise Lazarus from the dead.

There is also probably a lot more to dig up in these passages as well. Read Chapter 11 verses 19-40 and Jesus has these conversations with Martha and Mary which seem to bring up some important teachings of Jesus. It is within this context that He says: "'I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.'" (John 11:25-26)

Hope that answered that pretty well...

And now the second question is a little easier:

Hmmm... I have to say that I can't really remember for sure if I have heard lectors using 'this is...", because I have always heard it just, "The word of the Lord". I could not find the official way to do this in the GIRM, but the USCCB Committee on Divine Worship says: "At the end, the lector makes the acclamation, The Word of the Lord, with all responding, Thanks be to God." I think that should clear it up. Remember that the original Latin would be, "Verbum Domini", translating "The word of the Lord". I am not sure why it was (is?) so common to add the "this is..." before that, but I'm guessing that that was just some creative idea some liturgist came up with that became popular. This is really a minor point though, so I wouldn't go blowing a horn around at your local parish if they do it either way. From what you said, I'm guessing they are just trying to follow Rome more closely on how the Mass is supposed to be said, which is really quite awesome! I hope every church may be so concerned as to follow the rubrics carefully!

"This Saying is Hard; Who can Accept It?"---Part I

John chapter 6 is a difficult passage for those who say that Jesus is not really totally present in the Eucharist. The bread and wine at Mass actually change and become Jesus' Body and Blood! As Catholics however, we seem to think that we do believe and that others who deny it are the ones in the wrong, but have we ever examined ourselves regarding our real Faith in this "hard saying"? So what do we believe? The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church says: "The Eucharist is the very sacrifice of the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus which he instituted to perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross throughout the ages until his return in glory." (insert #271) Meditate on that for a moment: "...the very sacrifice of the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus..."!

Now imagine for a moment that you are not Catholic (if you are). You are just some person who considers themselves "non-denominational", but you are invited one Sunday by a co-worker to attend Mass with them. Since you like this co-worker very much as a friend and since he has done a lot for you, you decide to go. You walk in the Church and you take a look around. You're friend oddly dishes some water and starts hitting himself really quick in the form that you think you've seen a football player do before (okay, you'd probably know what the sign of the Cross is!). You're friend makes an awkward curtsy (and hand flinging thing again) before entering the pew and you were afraid he almost fell down but realize he's okay. You look around to see a people coming in greeting each other loudly, telling jokes, laughing, and catching up with each other since last Sunday. You're eye then stops on a quiet individual who is kneeling and praying, sticking out in this environment, and a few others who are doing the same. The Mass begins and the church breaks into singing a song about welcoming everyone and that we are all equal, except you notice that the only singing you hear is coming from the cantor in the loud sound system---everyone else is staring at a hymnal grunting or still shaking hands with late-comers. The priest gives a homily about loving our neighbors through not making fun of them, or at least that's how you best summarized it. It was kind of hard to get anything out of his 20 minute talk that kept hitting unrelated points. You're friend then tells you that this next part is the "Liturgy of the Eucharist", whatever that means. Everyone kneels down at for about five minutes while the priest reads really fast from a book on the table and oddly "falls down" a couple of times like my friend did earlier--there must be something to this falling down stuff. Everyone comes forward receiving Communion and your friend makes an uncomfortable comment quickly saying that you're not supposed to receive Communion because you're not a registered member of the parish. You shrug your shoulders and sit down,-- this is what all those songs about being welcome were about? Then the service ends quickly with another more upbeat song where everyone claps their hands off beat to the music. Everyone starts talking again and go quickly to get some donuts and coffee, but there wasn't any left when you get there.

Okay, now getting back to reality. As a Catholic, (or a non-Catholic) does any of this sound familiar? I honestly hope that you have never run across anything that happened in the above story, but realize that all of that (and worse), or at least very similar events have happened in Catholic parishes. How could you convince a non-Catholic that we as Catholics truly believe that Jesus Christ is REALLY present in the Holy Eucharist when we constantly deny Him through our actions. If Jesus is really present in the tabernacle at Church, then why would we be talking to our friends whom we see during the week or could talk to some other time? If Jesus is really present then why do we do gestures such as making the sign of the Cross and genuflecting as repetitive actions instead of doing them as actions of worship? Are we ashamed of Christ? Do we not really believe He is present in the Eucharist just as the person sitting next to me is present beside me? I will address the other points in this story in further blog posts, but for now, as Catholics, let us meditate on how our lives and how our actions are testifying to our Faith that Jesus Christ is truly present as He says He is in the Holy Eucharist.

John Paul II, We won't forget you!

Today marks the third anniversary of the death of Pope John Paul II, our recent great Pope. Let us ask for his intercession for the Church. His prayers were powerful while on earth, now think about how more powerful they must be as he is in Heaven!

VATICAN CITY, 2 APR 2008 (VIS) - In St. Peter's Square at 10.30 a.m. today, Benedict XVI presided at a Eucharistic celebration to mark the third anniversary of the death of Servant of God John Paul II. Members of the College of Cardinals concelebrated with the Holy Father.

Addressing the more than 40,000 people present, the Pope in his homily returned to the hours following the news of John Paul II's death on 2 April 2005, recalling the innumerable faithful who prayed before his body and participated in the funeral.

"Among the many human and supernatural qualities" of the late Pontiff, Benedict XVI mentioned "that of an exceptional spiritual and mystical sensibility. It sufficed to watch him as he prayed: he literally immersed himself in God and, during those moments, it seemed as if everything else was foreign to him. ... The Mass - as he often said - was for him the focal point of every day and of his entire life. The 'living and holy' reality of the Eucharist gave him the spiritual energy to guide the People of God along the path of history".

After recalling how John Paul II died on the eve of the second Sunday of Easter, the Holy Father highlighted how the late Pope's pontificate, "both as a whole and in many specific moments, appears to us as a sign and testimony of Christ's resurrection. The paschal dynamism which rendered John Paul II's existence a complete response to the call of the Lord, could not be expressed without his participation in the suffering and death of the divine Master and Redeemer".

Pope Benedict pointed out that the words from the Gospel that figured in today's Mass - the "do not be afraid" addressed by the angel to the women at the empty tomb - "became, from the solemn beginnings of his Petrine ministry, a kind of motto on the lips of Pope John Paul II".

He always pronounced these words "with unbending firmness, at first while carrying his bishop's staff with its cross and later, when his physical strength was waning, almost while supporting himself on it, until that final Good Friday in which he participated in the Way of the Cross from his private chapel, holding the cross in his arms. ... That eloquent scene of human suffering and faith ... revealed to believers and to the whole world the secret of an entire Christian life".

As little by little the late Polish Pontiff "lost everything, in the end even the power of speech, his trust in Christ became increasingly evident. As it was with Jesus, so with John Paul II, in the end words gave way to the extreme sacrifice, to the gift of self. Death was the seal of an existence entirely donated to Christ, conformed to Him even in physical terms, in his suffering and faithful abandonment in the arms of the heavenly Father".

The Holy Father also reminded those present that today marks the opening of the First World Apostolic Congress on Divine Mercy, which aims to study Pope John Paul's "rich Magisterium on this subject.

"God's mercy", Pope Benedict explained, "is a good key to understanding John Paul II's pontificate. He wanted the message of God's merciful love to reach all mankind and exhorted the faithful to bear witness to it".

"Servant of God John Paul II personally knew and experienced the immense tragedies of the 20th century, and for a long time he asked himself what could stem the tide of evil. The answer could not but be in the love of God. In fact, only Divine Mercy is capable of limiting evil; only God's all-powerful love can overcome the arrogance of the wicked, and the destructive power of selfishness and hatred".

The Holy Father gave thanks to the Lord "for having given the Church this faithful and courageous servant" and to the Virgin Mary "for having incessantly watched over his person and his ministry". He also asked John Paul II "to continue to intercede from heaven for each of us, and particularly for me whom Providence has called to take up his priceless spiritual legacy.

"May the Church", Pope Benedict added in conclusion, "following his teaching and example, continue in her evangelising mission faithfully and without compromise, tirelessly spreading Christ's merciful love, source of true peace for the whole world".

Back into the Blog of Things...

Well I hope that everyone's Easter season is going well! Yes, Easter lasts for about 50 days in case you think I'm crazy! I'm putting together a plan to blog rugularly so you can get more out of the Catholic Warrior. So here's what's coming up:

We'll see how well I can do on a set schedule, and PLEASE don't tell my "blogging is about having fun so don't be so strict" because I'm the kind of person that HAS to be strict with myself or nothing gets done!

EGYPTIAN MUSLIM JOURNALIST BAPTISED BY THE POPE

VATICAN CITY, 22 MAR 2008 (VIS) - Late this afternoon, Holy See Press Office Director Fr. Federico Lombardi S.J. released the following declaration to journalists:

"During this evening's Easter vigil, the Holy Father will administer Baptism to seven people, five women and two men from various countries.

"As is known, the Holy Father normally administers the Sacrament of Baptism on two liturgical occasions. In the Sistine Chapel on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord he administers Baptism to a group of new-born infants. On the Easter vigil he administers Baptism and the other two Sacraments of Christian initiation (Confirmation and Communion) to a group of adults of varying nationalities and conditions who have followed the necessary spiritual and catechetical preparation, which Christian tradition calls the 'catechumenate'.

"The catechumens who will receive Baptism tonight come from Italy, Cameroon, China, the United States and Peru. Among them is Magdi Allam, a well-known journalist of Egyptian origin, vice-director 'ad personam' of the Italian newspaper 'Corriere della Sera'.

"For the Catholic Church, anyone who asks to receive Baptism - following a profound individual exploration, a free choice and adequate preparation - has the right to receive it.

"For his part, the Holy Father administers Baptism during the course of the Easter liturgy to the catechumens who have been presented to him, without making any 'distinction between people', in other words considering them all as equally important before the love of the Lord and welcome in the community of the Church".

We should turn to Him Who has conquered death and the power of sin! Let us go to Him, repent, take up our cross and follow Him to death so that one day we may ALL rise to everlasting life! For if there had been no cross, there would be no ressurection!

Behold the Man!

I hope that this Triduum and Lent is/has brought you many graces! This year I had the special grace to serve as MC (Master of Ceremonies) for the Triduum Masses, which pretty much means I just tell all the servers where to go (in case you were wondering). Holy Thursday is always so special to recall how Christ instituted the Priesthood, the Mass, and of course the Eucharist all on one night! Then, we have a Eucharistic procession into the "Chapel of Repose" where we keep vigil recalling how our Lord wept and sweat blood in the Garden of Olives. He was remembering our sins and asking His Heavenly Father for strength to make the Ultimate Sacrifice. I think about how sometimes I get nervous about some event or appointment the next day or in a few hours, but what must it have been like to know that one of your greatest "friends" was about to betray you, all of your other friends would not stand up for you (minus a few), and you would be put to death in shame when you were completely innocent?! Obviously none of us can really know what Christ was going through totally because none of us are totally perfect as He was. What motivated Him to do this? It could only be that He IS Love! To know that we have a God Who loves us is absolutely incredible! He passionately loves us; that is Awesome!

Well, enough with my rambling! Today God really blessed me in a number of ways. I watched the Passion of the Christ by Mel Gibson as I do now every Good Friday. I prayed as I watched it, and Christ showed me some things that I think have really changed my life, or at least have given me the grace to know how to change my life---now it's my turn to do it. I hope you all will take the opportunity to watch this film or to watch it again prayerfully because it can certainly change lives. It is not fun, but it is necessary to remember what Christ did for us so that we can change.

"'He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.' When he was insulted, he returned no insult; when he suffered, he did not threaten; instead, he handed himself over to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness."

Finding Your True Inner Grump....

So how is Lent going for you all so far? So far, I've been slacking quite a bit... I really could work on doing some more penance in just the little day to day things---eat something I don't like so much, be more respectful towards others, and get up on time! Well, now that Lent's half way over, we should examine ourselves and see what we can do better on. Lent is about GIVING ourselves over to Christ by GIVING UP those things which draw us away from Him!

One of the best ways to do penance is to, yes, (sorry excuse the four letter "F" word) FAST!!! I'm not just talking that wimpy minimum the Church requires of you on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. I mean how is it FASTING when you still eat two or three (*smaller*) meals??? Yes, I know the Church REQUIRES relatively little of us, and that is fine and very good. Some people are not able, due to health reasons, fast very much if any, and that is okay if you really are not able. Another good thing is that because the Church doesn't require that much, this gives us an easy opportunity to do something EXTRA to prove our Love for God!

This Lent I've had some new reflections on fasting. Have you ever noticed something when you fast? I'm not talking about feeling hungry, I'm talking about your attitude. Ever get a little edgy or grumpy when you give up a few meals? Isn't it funny that when our blood sugar gets a little low we start to see our *true* selves come out? Never knew you could get so grumpy so quickly did you? This is why fasting is so beneficial. If we start to try our best to overcome sin and temptation when we are suffering we will be so much stronger when we are in normal conditions and better able to last in future fasting periods.

"And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you." (Matthew 6:16-18)

"Train yourself in godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come." (1 Timothy 4:7b-8)

"Beloved, I beseech you as aliens and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh that wage war against your soul." (1 Peter 2:11)

"Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal which comes upon you to prove you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice in so far as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed." (1 Peter 3:12)

"Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experience of suffering is required of your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, establish, and strengthen you." (1 Peter 5:8-10)

Spirit of Lent Meme

Thanks to Esther for tagging me with this penitential meme!

1. What’s been your best Lenten-effort-idea ever? Hmmm. Well, technically Good Friday's not in Lent, but I couldn't think of any breath taking Lenten ideas I've ingeniously come up with. So, every Good Friday I try to watch The Passion of the Christ by Mel Gibson. It really helps me to meditate on what Christ did for me and be much more grateful!

2. And your worst? Couldn't think of anything off hand. Giving up cheese one year was interesting. Couldn't say it was a bad idea, just weird...

3. What Lenten advice would you share? Giving up sin is a better idea than giving up chocolate or carbon (yes, I said carbon, not carbs!), but being penitential and fasting are very important practices for the serious Christian. Notice, Jesus says, "When you fast...", not, "If you fast...". So, try giving up stuff that won't help you come closer to Jesus Christ, and start doing stuff that will help! I guess I better read what I just typed...

4. And what will feature this year? This year I'm trying to wake earlier, talk to friends less, go on the computer less, watch movies less, and thanks to Divine Providence I think I'll start to be able to attend Mass a few times a week instead of just the Sunday obligation!

Read about it here. No matter what happened--whether or not the abuse allegations were true I don't know, and only the accusers, Fr. Maciel and God knows for sure. Either way, we should in all sincerity pray for the repose of his soul. Let us praise God for the good the Legionaries of Christ order has done for the Church!

Eternal Rest grant unto him, and may perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace, and may the souls of the faithful departed through the Mercy of God rest in peace! AMEN.

Altar Servers

You know you're an 'old-time' reader of this blog if you remember me posting about my 'new' apsotlate for heading up meetings for the Altar Servers. Wow. Well, those meetings were just short of a complete failure. We had an attendance of about 6 kids at most of them (what, like 2 meetings?) and none of the Altar Servers that really needed to come ever came! This was quite discouraging, but recently some new progress seems to be coming forward. The liturgist at my parish is helping me to head up a new program that I've come up with that will require every server to go through. This program will have different levels (beginner, intermediate etc..) that they must pass until they are to a certain level. They are able to attain another optional level if they wish which will prove that they are good leaders. If you would like a copy of what I've come up with, email me and I'll send it to you via email. A lot of it is based off of from this webpage. Thanks Fr. Terry!

We are having a meeting soon and will implement this program. Pray that it will succeed if God wills it, and also that I will be able to find good leaders to take over for me when I leave home in 5 months or so. Below are some things that we will probably go over as well:

Prayer Campaign...

Carolina Cannonball of The Crescat recently informed me that her dad's patron saint is St. Dominic Savio! She has requested that we pray for his conversion to come back to the Church. I don't know what his legal name is, but let's just pray for Dominic! I think many of us know of people close to us that are not Catholic and that may not be living any kind of spiritual life at all. Please join me in a campaign to pray for these souls who have fallen away from Christ or who have not found Him in the fullness of Truth yet! Below I am going to list some names of people that I would ask you pray for. If you would like add your own names in the combox and I will add them to the list soon! Diary of St Faustina

I have recently been reading the diary of St. Faustina and it has a lot of good stuff in it! Some of it is hard to relate to for me at least, as it is quite mystical. However I've been taking notes of pages that are good to share with you. Here is an excellent excerpt on confession...

"And again, I would like to say three words to the soul that is determined to strive for sanctity and to derive fruit; that is to say, benefit from confession.

First--- complete sincerity and openness. Even the holiest and wisest confessor cannot forcibly pour into the soul what he desires if it is not sincere and open. An insincere, secretive soul risks great dangers in the spiritual life, and even the Lord Jesus Himself does not give Himself to such a soul on a higher level, because He knows it would derive no benefit from these special graces.

Second word--- humility. A soul does not benefit as it should from the sacrament of confession if it is not humble. Pride keeps it in darkness. The soul neither knows how, nor is it willing, to probe with precision the depths of its own misery. It puts on a mask and avoids everything that might bring it recovery.

Third word--- obedience. A disobedient soul will win no victory, even if the Lord Jesus Himself, in the person, were to hear its confession. The most experienced confessor will be of no help whatsoever to such a soul. The disobedient soul exposes itself to great misfortunes; it will make no progress toward perfection, nor will it succeed in the spiritual life. God lavishes His graces most generously upon the soul, but it must be an obedient soul."

The Biggest Decision of my Life...

I just wanted to drop by real quickly and say a big "thank you" to everyone who gave their prayers for me during the past couple of days (especially Kaila, Cy and Soutenus)!

My decision is (God Willing) to enter the Archdiocese of Denver. I would love have any prayers that you could offer as I continue to apply and will begin to live the life of a seminarian before too long. Of course my prayers are with you all as well! God Bless!

Prayer Request...

This past weekend I had the opportunity to go to Denver and meet with Archbishop Chaput! I have recently been involved with applying for Denver and this was the next step to take. I talked to him about my desire to serve the people of the diocese of Pueblo but yet still have a good formation. He told me some stuff I have never considered before, and I need to make a decision very soon as to what diocese I will be applying for. Please pray for me as I have never made such a big decision in my life! Depending which diocese I go for will shape many things in my future. I will probably post tomorrow which diocese I have picked. Again, please keep me in your prayers! Thank you so much!

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY

VATICAN CITY, 15 JAN 2008 (VIS) - The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, traditionally celebrated every year from January 18 to 25, begins on Friday.

The theme chosen for this year's initiative, taken from the First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians, is: "Pray without ceasing". The texts for reflection and prayer have been prepared by the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and the Commission on Faith and Order of the World Council of Churches.

Each day of the Week will have a different theme:

18 January: Pray always. "Pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5, 17).

19 January: Pray always, trusting God alone. "Give thanks in all circumstances" (1 Thessalonians 5, 18).

20 January: Pray without ceasing for the conversion of hearts. "Admonish the idlers, encourage the faint-hearted" (1 Thessalonians 5, 14).

21 January: Pray always for justice. "See that none of you repays evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to all" (1 Thessalonians 5, 15).

22 January: Pray constantly with a patient heart. "Be patient with all of them" (1 Thessalonians 5, 14).

23 January: Pray always for grace to work with God. "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5, 16).

24 January: Pray for what we need. "... help the weak" (1 Thessalonians 5, 14).

25 January: Pray always that they all may be one. "Be at peace" (1 Thessalonians 5, 13b)

Although the traditional period for celebrating this week of prayer is in the month of January, in the southern hemisphere Churches sometimes seek other periods such as, for example, around the time of Pentecost, which is also a symbolically significant date for the unity of the Church, and was suggested by the Faith and Order movement in 1926.

In the basilica of St. Paul's Outside-the-Walls at 5.30 p.m. on Friday, 25 January, Feast of the Conversion of the Apostle Paul, Benedict XVI will preside at the celebration of Vespers to mark the close of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

St. Dominic Savio; Patron of The Catholic Warrior 2008

You may have noticed in the sidebar the blog's new patron for 2008, St. Dominic Savio. Now, this is not the St. Dominic that most people have heard of, the man who established the Dominicans and the rosary among other things. Instead, this is a saint who lived in the mid-nineteenth century and died at only 15 years old from sickness. He had a motto in life, “Death rather than sin!”. This is so blatantly different than our culture which screams that everyone has a right to sin! If we belong to God, then we allow Him to guide our "rights", our free-will. Sin is real, and unless we can overcome our sin we can't live our life with God, in Heaven, or even right now. No one is perfect, but we must strive towards perfection everyday and to live our lives in a radical relationship with Jesus Christ! As the Holy Scriptures tell us: "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23)

Patron of the Falsly Accused

b. 1842 d. 1857
St. Dominic Savio was born in Italy in 1842. One day when he was just four, he disappeared and his good mother went looking for him. She found the little fellow in a corner praying with his hands joined and his head bowed. He already knew all his prayers by heart! At five, he was an altar boy. When he was seven, he received his First Holy Communion. On that solemn day, he chose a motto: "Death, but not sin!" and he kept it always.
"A teenager such as Dominic, who bravely struggled to keep his innocence from Baptism to the end of his life, is really a saint," said Pope St. Pius X.
Yes, Dominic was an ordinary boy with an extraordinary love for God.
At the age of twelve, Dominic entered the school run by St. John Bosco. Don Bosco examined him first and at the end of the questions, Dominic asked,
"What do you think of me?"
"I think you're good material," answered the priest, with a big smile.
"Well, then," said Dominic, "You are a good tailor, so if the material is good, take me and make a new suit out of me for Our Lord!"
Everyone in the school saw from the way he prayed that this boy was different. He greatly loved all the boys, and even though he was younger, he used to worry about them. He was afraid that they would lose the grace of God by sinning.
One day, a fellow brought a magazine full of bad pictures to school. In a minute, a group of boys had gathered around him to see it.
"What's up?" wondered Dominic, and he, too, went to look. Just one peek was enough for him. He grabbed the magazine and tore it to pieces! "Poor us!" he cried in the meantime, "Did God give us eyes to look at such things as this? Aren't you ashamed?"
"Oh, we were just looking at these pictures for the fun of it," said one boy.
"Sure, for fun," answered Dominic, "and in the meantime you're preparing yourselves to go to hell!"
"Oh, what's so wrong about looking at these pictures anyway?" another fellow demanded.
Dominic had a ready answer. "If you don't see anything wrong," he said sadly, "this is even worse." It means you're used to looking at shameful things!"
No one said anything after that. They all realized that Dominic was right. Another time he stopped a terrific stone-throwing fight between two angry boys. Holding up a little crucifix between them, he said, "Before you fight, look at this and say, 'Jesus Christ was innocent and He died forgiving His murderers. I am a sinner, and I am going to hurt Him by not forgiving my enemies.' Then you can start - and throw your first stone at me!"
The two boys were so ashamed of themselves that they apologized, and promised to go to confession too.
One day Dominic began to feel sick and was sent home to get better. While at home he grew worse, instead, and received the last Sacraments. He was only fifteen then, but he did not fear death. In fact, he was overjoyed at the thought of going to Heaven. Just before he died, he tried to sit up.
"Goodbye," he murmured to his good father. Suddenly his face lit up with a smile of great joy and happiness. "I am seeing such wonderful things!" he exclaimed. Then he spoke no more, for he had gone to Heaven.
Dominic is the patron saint of choir boys and of the falsely accused.
This latter title was given to him due to the following incident. One time, two boys filled the school stove with snow and garbage during the cold winter months. When the teacher came back into the room, they falsely accused Dominic of doing the "dirty" deed. Although disciplined in front of the entire class, Dominic refused to tell on the two mischievous boys. When the truth was later revealed, Dominic was asked why he didn't confess to his innocence. He remarked that he was imitating Our Lord, Who remained silent during His persecutions and crucifixion.

His feast day is March 9th.

1. Be more diligent in my spiritual and temporal duties. (This also requires me to get up at 6 AM every weekday at least... Not my best hour)

Time versus Eternity...

I recently attended a wonderful day retreat where we heard a talk about time versus eternity. When was the last time you thought about this? When was the last time you actually took a second to realize that we are going to live forEVER somewhere (Heaven or Hell), and that our time now is nothing more than a speck in the face of eternity. In the Bible it says: "What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes." (James 4:14b)

How true that is! None of us knows if Jesus will return in our lifetime, or if our lives will end very soon. Although we don't know when our lives will end, we do know that they will end.

It is interesting when people find out that they have a terminal sickness and that they will die soon. The doctor tells them "Get your house in order!". Shouldn't we always have our 'house in order'? Thank God for the sacrament of confession where we have the opportunity to clean our souls of that sin and have the chance to try again (and again)! We must be careful though to not grow slack and think we have time. Our time is very short. I don't know how much time anyone has, but in the face of eternity, all the time in the world is short.

Then also, we shouldn't simply think that if I go to confession and stay out of mortal sin then I am okay. No! God has given us our lives and the little time we have for a reason! It is our duty to help our own soul first, yes, but then we must fight very hard to help bring all souls to Christ. Evangelization!!! We are the Church militant! It is our duty to work for Christ in the vocation and mission we are called to serve right now!

Remember the story Jesus told where the servants all got some talents and they were supposed to multiply those talents before the king returned? (Matthew 25:14-30) Remember how one servant who received one talent, buried his talent to keep it safe, and upon the king's return the servant gave the one talent back. The king was furious that the servant had not even put the talent in the bank to get interest---he had done absolutely nothing beneficial with his money.

Just so, we should think of those talents as our time, our vocation, and our mission. We cannot simply stay in our little shells and keep our souls "safe". We are called to go out and bring more back for Christ! We are called to use every second the way God intends for us to use it. Personally, not wasting time is an everyday challenge. However, we really should examine our conscience to see if we have done this sin and repent of it if we are guilty. Like Benjamin Franklin once said, "Lost time is never found again.".

Just wanted to point out to everyone that the poll is back up and running! C'mon... I know you don't want to admit (or think about) how much money you spent this year---but fess up! Or I'll send a battalion of Swiss guards after ya!

Results from the last poll indicate that in the event of a plane crash most people would try to make sure their soul is ready to meet God (versus trying to raid the food section!). We should always try our best to be prepared to face the Judgement of God! The end for us is coming at an unknown hour---LET'S GET READY!!!

Meditation Before Christmas

Stressed out about finding a last minute gift? Still didn't send the Christmas cards? Ran out of tape for the wrapping? Still getting the house ready for the guests? Worried about bad weather for traveling? ?????

It seems that Christ's coming into our world and God giving us His Son has brought a lot of stress around this time of year! Actually, no, it's NOT God who is bringing this stress---it's ourselves---it's our culture and our materialism...

Isn't it ironic that the Savior and Lord of the World was born in a poor stable on a cold night, forgotten by all but a few angels and shepherds, when our children sit on "Santa's" lap and tell him what THEY WANT for Christmas! Instead of telling Santa how they have given THEMSELVES to the Baby Jesus through acts of charity and penance, they go say "I WANT...".

The giving of material gifts should NOT be our focus this Christmas. This Christmas let's meditate on how we can really give of ourselves to God, our family, and OTHERS! Let's not focus on ourselves and our personal desires but learn to mortify ourselves and to like Christ give what is most precious---OUR VERY LIFE!

I thought I'd go ahead and post a couple of good talks from our wonderful pope, Benedict XVI. Some important truths we should keep in mind. I think that Relativism is the greatest "heresy" of modern times.

COUNTER RELATIVISM WITH FUNDAMENTAL TRUTHS

"At the same time, international discussions often seem marked by a relativistic logic which would consider as the sole guarantee of peaceful coexistence between peoples a refusal to admit the truth about man and his dignity, to say nothing of the possibility of ethics based on recognition of the natural moral law. This has led, in effect, to the imposition of a notion of law and politics which ultimately makes consensus between states, ... the only real basis of international norms."

Among "the bitter fruits of this relativistic logic," the Pope mentioned "the attempt to consider as human rights the consequences of certain self-centered lifestyles; a lack of concern for the economic and social needs of the poorer nations; contempt for humanitarian law, and a selective defense of human rights."

The Holy Father expressed the hope that the Church's social doctrine may become "better known and accepted on the international level" and encouraged his listeners "to counter relativism creatively by presenting the great truths about man's innate dignity and the rights which are derived from that dignity." This, he said, "will help to advance specific initiatives marked by a spirit of solidarity and freedom.

"What is needed," Pope Benedict added, "is a spirit of solidarity conducive for promoting as a body those ethical principles which, by their very nature and their role as the basis of social life, remain non-negotiable. A spirit of solidarity imbued with a strong sense of fraternal love leads to a better appreciation of the initiatives of others and a deeper desire to cooperate with them."

"An authentic spirit of freedom, lived in solidarity, will help the initiative of the members of non-governmental organization to create a broad gamut of new approaches and solutions with regard to those temporal affairs which God has left to the free and responsible judgement of every individual. THE WORLD NEEDS OUR COMMON WITNESS TO CHRIST

VATICAN CITY, DEC 6, 2007 (VIS) - The Holy Father today received in audience members of the joint international commission sponsored by the Baptist World Alliance and the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, who are currently meeting in Rome to ponder the theme: "The Word of God in the Life of the Church: Scripture, Tradition and Koinonia."

That theme, said the Pope in his English-language address to the delegates, "offers a promising context for the examination of such historically controverted issues as the relationship between Scripture and Tradition, the understanding of Baptism and the Sacraments, the place of Mary in the communion of the Church, and the nature of ... primacy in the Church's ministerial structure.

"If our hope for reconciliation and greater fellowship between Baptists and Catholics is to be realized," he added, "issues such as these need to be faced together, in a spirit of openness, mutual respect and fidelity to the liberating truth and saving power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ."

"Today, as ever, the world needs our common witness to Christ and to the hope brought by the Gospel," Pope Benedict concluded. "Obedience to the Lord's will should constantly spur us, then, to strive for that unity so movingly expressed in His priestly prayer: 'that they may all be one... so that the world may believe.' For the lack of unity between Christians 'openly contradicts the will of Christ, provides a stumbling block to the world, and harms the most holy cause of proclaiming the good news to every creature'."

Science and God...

Recently I've been spending a considerable (that means too much) amount of time on Facebook and my seemingly disastrous boycott of the Golden Compass stuff ect.. Anyhow, one bit of good coming from all this though is that I've received some interesting messages from Facebook members, and I thought I'd share with you one such message (keeping names anonymous of course) that I received today that was interesting: "Hi, I was wondering why you believe in God with such passion when all evdience points to the contrary?"

This message was so short and straightforward (quite unusual), and well, I thought it deserved a, well, not quite so short but hopefully straightforward answer. I am posting it below and hope that you will find it beneficial!

Hey thanks for the note! I'll try to answer your question of why I believe in God when, as you said, "all evidence points to the contrary".
First I must ask what "evidence" are you talking about? If you are talking about scientific evidence then I must say it is impossible scientifically to disprove the existence of God. Why? Well, first of all, if God is the Creator of the entire universe and all that exists then He has the power to reveal Himself as much or as little as He chooses. We can't expect to examine God under a microscope. Now, of course that is assuming He exists. But how would you go about scientifically to DISproving God? It is impossible. Science cannot disprove the Loch Ness monster for example (I'm not saying I believe in this creature). Let's take that example. If scientists wanted for all time to disprove the existence of this creature then they of course would have to search the waters. However if they made a search of the whole lake and found nothing, that would NOT disprove the existence of Nessy. Why? Unless they were able to search the entire area of water ALL AT ONCE and at THE SAME TIME then they could not even come close to saying that the creature doesn't exists, as the monster can move around and go to an area already searched before. Additionally they would have to take into account that this monster could be hiding in an underwater cave that is unknown to man or is somehow greatly camouflaged etc..
Anyways, why am I talking about the Loch Ness monster? I mean, our discussion is about GOD'S existence. Well, the reason I bring this up is that I am saying there is absolutely no way for science to disprove God's existence. It is extremely difficult and nigh impossible for scientists to disproof the Loch Ness monster, so do you think that it would be possible to DISprove God? It is not. So please tell what "evidence" you are talking about, as I firmly believe that there is no "EVIDENCE" to disprove God.
Anyway, so why do I believe in God? Well, first of all, my belief in God is based off of reason. Personally, I don't understand how it is possible that anything could exist without a being that created everything. There would be only two logical positions. Either A.) Everything always existed (which is beyond our comprehension as everything we know of in the scientific world has NOT always existed). Or B.) Something came from Nothing (which is just plain stupid).
I believe that if something always existed it had to be something greater than what we could ever possibly understand. I don't believe it is "something" though but SomeBODY----God. Only something greater than we have ever discovered or "known" scientifically could've existed forever (try thinking about that for a sec---something ALWAYS having been in existence).
Also, God has revealed Himself in so many different ways it would be impossible to count them all. He has worked so many spectacular miracles (if you like I'll give you some examples) and I have found fulfillment in my life through coming know of God and Who He is.
My belief in God is not something that is tested scientifically through trying to find "god particles" or something ridiculous like that, but it does require a certain amount of faith (belief in something that you cannot totally see or comprehend). Yet, if you think about it, no matter what position you take (whether you believe in God or not) it requires FAITH. If you do not believe in God, it takes FAITH that He doesn't exists as I just stated above it is impossible to disproof God. Likewise, it takes faith to believe in God, but my faith is based on reason and I cannot imagine that there could exist a world without God.
My faith in God, I believe, is not insignificant. In other words, we might be tempted to think that whether or not God exists doesn't really matter. One might think that it doesn't effect them. However, that is not the case. If God created everything and left it at that and never revealed Himself or interacted with man then sure--I would think that God doesn't care and we have no responsibility to follow Him. However, that is NOT the case. The point is is that God has revealed Himself to man (e.g. read the Bible to see what I mean) and has laid down laws for him to obey (e.g. Ten Commandments) and also has established the Church (Matthew 16) in which to guide those who wish to follow Him. He died for us to make reparation for the punishment earned for our sins and so that we may have eternal life IF we choose to follow this God Who is Love. This God has given us His very self in His Infinite Love and demands that we respond--either to except this relationship with Him, or to reject it. The choice is ours, but it is a decision that we all must make. To reject it is to reject true Love, happiness, and peace.

I understand that from your perspective this all may be difficult to comprehend, but I ask that you at least take some time to meditate on what I've said and think about it before you respond. I hope this response has helped you to understand better!

I felt like the first half went well, while the second half was quite challenging. However, I'm sure that God's Will will be accomplished no matter what the outcome. The "Peaceful Religion of Teddy Bear Lovers"

A British school teacher who is (was) a teacher in a Sudanese school is accused of "insulting Islam" for allowing her class of 7 year-olds name a teddy bear "Muhammad". Read the story here. Apparently to name an animal "Muhammad" is very disrespectful at best in the Islamic religion.

Okay, I understand that they could say naming an animal after their holiest prophet to be disrespectful, but we are dealing with a Teddy bear for Pete's sake. Also, it seems about every 1 in 4 guys in Islamic countries has the name "Muhammad" attached somewhere, which would explain why the kids would think of naming a teddy bear as such.

Additionally, the woman who permitted this "act" was a British woman who I believe is Episcopalian, and therefore cannot be expected to necessarily know that naming a teddy bear after the Islamic prophet would be disrespectful. If a group of little kids wanted to name their class teddy bear Jesus without meaning it as a joke, I would see this as innocence and not as an act of hatred of insult.

If this woman had been convicted of "inciting religious hatred" she would've received 40 "lashes" and would have to serve 6 months in prison if she received the maximum sentence. Now she only has to serve 15 days.

I'm glad I live in a country that isn't controlled by Muslims (yet). We can name our Teddy Bears without getting trouble!

Prayer Request...

I would ask my readers to take a moment now to pray for a man at my church who has had cancer found in his body. Apparently doctors were removing a cancerous tissue, and when they were doing surgery found more cancerous cells. I don't know how serious it is yet, but this man also has numerous other health problems, and he can't be much older than about 55. He does a lot of good at our local church, and is loved by many.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Well, in my time zone there's still 45 minutes more of Thanksgiving, and if we want to be more like the pilgrims, there's still 2 more days to celebrate! Anyway, I hope you guys all had a blessed Thanksgiving. I started the day out very nicely by going to Confession, Holy Mass, and then visiting a cemetery to pray for the souls in Purgatory. The rest of the day there was lots of work to be done in the house, but it was worth waiting for that wonderful dinner prepared by my wonderful parents! Anyway, there is so much to be thankful for, and I think it's just great that our Country has this day dedicated to thankfulness. Oh, and in case you want to keep up with the times so as to not offend anyone that might be working for the ACLU---I wish you all a "Happy Turkey Day!"

Also, if you felt like your Thanksgiving was not very nice and couldn't think of anything you were thankful for, please take a minute to look at the picture below and remember that we have something to be thankful for all the time!

Movie Review: Flight 93

I know most people have seen this movie (or United 93), but I have just recently been able to watch it, and I thought I should do a review on it. The story is, of course, of the September 11th flight United 93 which was the only plane hijacked on September 11th which did not reach its intended destination. The hijackers seemed to do everything right at first--they killed a flight attendant, a passenger, and scared everyone into believing that they had a bomb if there was any resistance. They managed to get into the cockpit and kill both pilots, and then take control of the plane. The scared passengers were ushered to the back of the plane where many made phone calls to family members telling them what was going on, and also finding out from their loved ones about the other planes that had hit the World Trade Center in New York just a little earlier that morning. The passengers learned that the other planes had been suicide missions, and no reported "real" bombs had been on the other planes. The people united to try to "take down" the terrorist and gain control of the plane. Of course, we know they failed to take control of the plane, but they saved lives by not allowing the terrorists to succeed in flying the plane into the original target.

The movie does not take many liberties whatsoever to change the story or make it "more exciting". It is not a movie for entertainment, but rather a movie that allows us to remember and not forget the courage of American citizens that day. It shows us the gruesome reality of that evil that those men committed. I highly recommend watching this movie, or watching it again. We will never forget, and let us pray for the victims, their families, and for the conversion of all souls--especially let us also remember to pray for the conversion of Muslims.

5 Star match up...

Acting: 4 1/2 stars. It seemed realistic without overly dramatized. Very moving.

Entertainment: 5 stars. Again, it's not entertainment--captivating is a good word.
Sexual content: 4 1/2 stars. Slight immodesty in a couple guys (very little), and a man and woman seen kissing.

Violent content: 3 1/2 stars. Flight 93 is obviously a violent story and tense, but this film shows very little graphic violence. There is blood shown to show people were hurt but no graphic nature to this one. The film United 93 shows more I think--though I haven't seen this one yet.

Language content: 3.5 stars. A few bad words scattered throughout.
Other immoral content: 4 stars. Obviously terrorism is a topic, though in no way shown in a positive light. It would be disturbing (perhaps inappropriate) to younger audiences.

Over all rating: 4 stars.

Definitely worth watching!

The Golden Compass

Recently I've heard about a new movie to be released this December (7th) called "The Golden Compass". This movie is the first in a series of movies based off Phillip Pullman's books His Dark Materials. These books are indeed very anti-Christian and seemingly even more specifically anti-Catholic. By the end of the trilogy the "God" (who is the whole time portrayed as weak and cruel) dies of his own weakness and I think the "good guys" (who are really bad guys and include witches) win and defeat the Church.

Now you may be thinking that this just sounds like another Harry Potter controversy. Personally I still think that Harry Potter is not a good work, but His Dark Materials is much more blatantly evil and I do not think that there is much doubt. Pullman is against CS Lewis, a very good Christian fantasy author, and his series (among other things) portrays Heaven as place of torment.

How could this be any clearer? Isn't it sad that we have a new "hit" movie coming out right around the Christmas season directed at young viewers that is anti-Christ. I ask that if you think these movies and books are wrong that you make a stand! Do not go to the movie or let your children go! Do not buy his books---we have plenty of good literature out there for our children and ourselves without this trash!

Roma!

Well, I guess some of you may like to hear some about what it was like being in Rome. First of all, the whole experience was very awesome, and I really hope that the Lord should allow me to return (and stay!) some time. I was tempted to "miss" my return flight and let the immigration police take me home.

A close to eight hour flight from Newark, NJ landed us in Rome around 7:30 AM (jet lag is purgatory). There at the airport we met our wonderful tour guide Maria, who did above and beyond her job. As you saw in the slide show we visited all 4 of the Major basilicas in Rome: St. Paul outside the Walls, St. Mary Major, St. John Lateran, and (of course) St. Peter's. My favorite of course would be St. Peter's, as there is nothing like it. It is so huge (never knew that sooo many huge statues existed) and beautiful. In addition we saw many smaller (certainly NOT small) churches (including St. Peter in Chains and the Holy Cross Church---the latter containing relics of the true cross) which were very ornate and awesome. In one church (you kind of lose your memory after church #5) there was buried most of the remains of St. Catherine of Sienna.

We also visited the Vatican Art Museum which was fascinating. Connected to the museum is the Sistine chapel (no pictures are permitted), and further is the burial place for the pontiffs. Included in the papal burial area was the tomb of Pope John Paul II.

The highlight of the trip was most certainly the Masses that were celebrated in those holy places. Our spiritual director on the trip, Fr. Malin, beautifully celebrated the liturgy (and allowed me to serve at almost every Mass) at St. Peter's (I didn't serve here), the catacombs, St. John Lateran, St. Paul outside the Walls, Santa Maria di Angeli, and others. It was soo cool when he faced the "ad orientem" (away from the people for the Eucharistic prayers) position in some of the churches where the altars are placed against the walls.

We also visited the "Scala Sancta", or "Holy Stairs", which was one of my personal favorites parts of the trip. To see so many people devoutly ascend the steps only their knees was just something else. To think that I was touching the stairs that Our Lord walked up on and down when He was condemned is unexplainable.

Many miracles seemed to have happened while we were there. At the Vatican Fr. Malin and about 5 other people from our group (not me unfortunately) went to confession at the Vatican to a Carmelite priest. This priest was not in anyway connected with our group, but was simply a priest that was hearing confessions in English at the Vatican in one of the confessionals. As Fr. Malin told me, this is what happened to him: Fr. Malin went into confession and named a sin. Then, before he said the rest of his confession, the priest went on to name some of his other sins! He asked Fr. Malin, "Is this correct?" He responded, "Yes, I was about to say these." Furthermore, Fr. Malin likes to make a "General Confession" (an Ignatian devotion---a confession which goes through your entire life) every year around August but had unfortunately not been able to this year. Fr. Don of course had not brought this up to this priest, but the priest anyway said, "So, you have not been able to make your general confession this year, and so I will allow you to do that now." (Please remember confessions there are always behind the screen) This priest must be one of those unheard of living saints.

My "Rome miracle" was perhaps not quite as exciting, but showed me how much it is necessary to trust in God. On a Saturday we had a free afternoon from the usual schedule of tour guides and activities. Since everyone seemed to have their own un-exciting or expensive plans, I made my own which was neither un-exciting or expensive. I happen to know a Legionaries of Christ seminarian named Br. Edward who used to be my spiritual director, and of course is a personal friend. He has been in Rome now for a couple of months and so I decided it would be fun to try to see him and have him show me around the Legionary seminary in Rome. I had emailed him like a day before we left, but of course that doesn't leave him enough time to get back since I wasn't able to check email much. I sent him my cell phone number which did no good as my cell phone didn't work in Rome (long story), and I tried calling the seminary from a local phone, but after trying every area code combination I could think of, I could not even get a single ringing phone on the other end. Okay, so I decide I'll risk it and hope he happens to be at the seminary and available to visit on the only afternoon I had available. Since taxis charge the amount to send their kids to college I was counseled to travel on the buses which are very cheap. I got specific directions from Maria (God bless that amazing woman!) who made sure I understood them. So I get on the correct first bus, but got off late and ended up on a wrong second bus (yes, I am navigationally challenged among other things). After about 2-3 hours of getting myself lost, walking up and down streets, and having no clue where I was at, I finally spotted my bus! I ran and missed the bus of course, and so I'm waiting at this bus stop hoping that this bus will be the right one (BTW, my directions only get me to an area "very close" to the school, and so I am supposed to ask for directions afterwards) I was praying during this whole time to Jesus, Mary and of course our navigator St. Anthony. It seemed the line was busy for awhile, but I started the Divine Mercy Chaplet (while I'm waiting at this bus stop) and within about 2-3 minutes I see two Legionaries of Christ guys walking right by me---one of them "happens" to be Br. Edward. Sorry, but I'm just not one of those guys who knows he's going to be the next cereal box winner to Hawaii---this was a miracle (BTW, did I mention that there are about 450 Legionaries just in Rome, and about 3 million people in the city). I placed my trust in God and He worked His own plan in. The priest that was with Br. Edward informed me that I was going the wrong way to the seminary (LOL--boy, do you have to rub it in?). Anyway, after a wonderful visit with my seminarian friend, who showed me around the seminary, I gave up on my new directions back to the hotel and took a taxi--hey some Italian kid will be going to college thanks to me!

Later we visited the most beautiful city I've ever been to--Assisi. This town has not changed much at all since St. Francis lived there in the Middle Ages. The Franciscan nuns and brothers are still very traditional and strict there. Parents will do as much as send their daughters to court rather than allow them to enter the cloistered convent there, as they will probably never see their daughter again. It was very cold and drizzling while we there on Monday but that didn't stop the Franciscan brothers and sisters to wear sandals and bare feet. The churches there are very beautiful as well but in a very different way than Rome. In Assisi the churches are simple and draw their beauty from that simplicity, while in Rome it is screaming decoration everywhere. I would love to live in Assisi one day.

I cannot explain with words or pictures what it is really like to go there on a pilgrimage, and I hope one day each of you will have an opportunity to go there. I have left out a lot of what happened during the trip, so if you would like you can leave a comment asking for something else you would like to hear about---I don't wish to bore you to death!!!

Hey everybody, sorry I haven't been keeping up with the blog! I thank everyone who has been commenting (and for the emails which I have been slow to respond to--I'll catch up soon). In reparation I am posting this video of some photos from my pilgrimage to Italy.
No number of photos can compare to actually going to these holy places, seeing them, and praying there. If God ever gives you the opportunity to make a pilgrimage there (not just a vacation), you must go! I'll give you some stories later.

Why You shouldn't Give Friends Your Password...

Hi everybody!!! I have returned from Italy and will resume blogging soon. I had an awesome time and will tell you some stories later!

A friend of mine who knew my password evidently changed my blog to an evil color---I greatly apologize for any damage done to your eyes! I have changed my password "Flick" (inside joke), and my color back to normal, so that shouldn't happen again!

Why there will be no blogging for two weeks....

I just wanted to let everyone know that I will probably not be blogging for about two weeks because I am just about to leave on my trip to Rome. Tomorrow morning (15th) I'll be flying out from Denver airport and beginning my pilgrimage to the Eternal City! Feel free to comment while I'm gone on anything---and yes, I promise to bring back lots of pictures!

Family Values

This article below states something I believe is very core to bringing up a godly society. So many times it seems that parents think their children can be educated and "brought up" in their society and that they do not have to teach them themselves. They think their education (ie. morals) is given to them by their local church through the various programs or youth programs. This is such a lie! I know personally of youth who have left the Church who were actively involved in the youth group, altar serving, confirmation classes etc.. They were not just "pew warmers", and yet, for some reason they stopped coming to church, and perhaps even lost faith in God. Why is this? I blame partially (because this is not always true) the family they were brought up in. Were the parents taking the initiative to lead the family in the Faith through godly lives and examples. Did they personally take time as a family to discuss religion, God, what the Church teaches, and why it is so awesome to be Catholic? Did they teach their kids not only what we believe, but also why we believe it? These are the fundamental questions to ask. Now, even in the best brought up family there will be those youth who decide for themselves that they don't want to follow Christ and His Church anymore---for various reasons. But the family is the necessary pillar to bring up your children in the ways of God. So when was the last time you had a family discussion about the Faith?

SOS For Mysterium Fidei

Mysterium Fidei blog, run by Nicholas Larkin, has always been one of my favorite blogs to visit. I am personally a friend with Nicholas (meaning REAL life), and he has informed me that he would actually keep his blog, Mysterium Fidei, open if at least 5 commenters (with Blogger IDs--no Anonymous) would tell him explicitly that they do not wish for him to close down the blog.

Prayer Request...

May I ask that if you are reading this you would take some time today to pray for me. I am currently in the process of discerning where God would like me to go to seminary to study for the priesthood. I have pretty much narrowed it down to two possibilities...

A. I go through the Denver Archdiocese which is well known for their orthodox formation and diocese.

B. I go through my own home diocese of Pueblo, which although this diocese is somewhat known for liberalism, we do not have our own seminaries (because we are poor). This means I would go through seminaries which many different dioceses send their students to. I have been told that these seminaries, although they have had troubled pasts, that they have "shaped" up and are producing good orthodox priests. I have seen a couple of these priests that have come out of these seminaries, and although they are not exactly what I would like to be as a priest, they seem to be quite orthodox and faithful to the Church. The seminaries I would most likely be sent to through my diocese are: Conception Seminary College in Conception, Missouri (first 4 years) and then to St. Meinrad School of Theology in St. Meinrad, Indiana (for 2-3 years I think). Have you heard about anything good or bad in any of these two seminaries? If so please leave a comment for my benefit---otherwise please just pray for me in this difficult decision of trying to follow the Lord on the Path He has set before me.

Movie Review: Pathfinder

A while ago a co-worker of mine told me that I should watch this film called Pathfinder, and so the other day I bought the film (since there was a deal at Hastings) and watched it yesterday. Unfortunately, I somehow (accidentally) managed to buy the unrated extended version which I thoroughly regret as you will see below. The story is a legend that 600 years before Columbus discovered America, vikings came and tried to settle in America, but were somehow defeated. In the movie, a young viking boy refuses to help his men fight the natives (therefore was rejected and left) and is adopted by an Indian family. They raise him, but 15 years later the Vikings return and attempt to wipe out every Indian village they can find. This boy may be the only hope in defending these Indians.

OK, I've laid out the story and maybe it sounds like it has some potential. The movie first of all has terrible character development and it is awkward in how it plays out. One scene will jump to the next scene (with different scenery) and it gets quite confusing. There are occasional points in the film where there is dialogue between characters, but it never lasts. The acting was fine, but mostly there was little to act in this film as it is mostly fighting and violence.

The Vikings could pretty much be compared to orcs or monsters. They are brutal and kill every Indian they can get their swords on. The violence too, is not just plentiful but graphic as well, which is very unfortunate. Overall with all the battle scenes (which were pretty much just genocide scenes) it got very tiring and sicking with seemingly very little purpose to all of this. This is a very un-inspirational movie, and I cannot even begin to compare it to some good films like The Gladiator and The Patriot, that although these latter had quite a bit of violence there was an inspirational story line and excellent acting throughout.

I read the reviews for Pathfinder but of course I couldn't find a review on the unrated and extended version. This version possesses more graphic battle scenes and it has a "sex" scene added in which I had to quickly skip.

Overall, I cannot honestly think of a worse movie that I've ever seen. I may very likely end up throwing this one in the trash because yes it was that bad!

Acting: 3 stars. Like I said, there was little "acting" in this film as it is mostly fighting.

Entertainment: 1 star. Read above.

Sexual content: 1 star. Tribal clothing is revealing sometimes, 1 scene of attempted rape, and 1 sex scene

Violent content: 1 star. Very graphic violence, torture, and killing in every way possible before modern weapons.

Language content: 3.5 stars. A few bad words scattered throughout.

Other immoral content: 5 stars. The above pretty much covers everything.

Over all rating: 2.4 stars

Blessed are the Pure of Heart, for They Shall see God!

I have recently been struggling with temptations against purity and know that almost everyone out there has to a greater or lesser extent. I sometimes wish so badly that I didn't have to fight this fight, but I am willing to for as long as Our Lord wishes it! I was recommended a book awhile ago called The Courage to be Chaste by Fr. Benedict Groeschel. It is a good book from what I have read and below I would like to give an excerpt below that I believe the Lord shoved in my face today, knowing how it would help me!

"To prepare for the hour of trial it is best to overcome less powerful and virulent temptations. Every temptation that is overcome strengthens a person, even if there are subsequent failures. The most dangerous temptation for those trying to be chaste is what I call the "temptation of temptation."

The tempted person's mind is in a state of conflict. It is a painful time when the individual is pulled in opposite directions. He or she has little or no inner peace, is anxious about the immediate future, apprehensive concerning spiritual danger, and angry and frustrated over such a conflict. Then the temptation of temptation comes: 'Oh, get it over with! What difference will one more episode make. Then I will be at peace or at least able to pray with repentance. God will seem near, whereas He seems so far away now.'

If there is any place in sexual temptation where I am inclined to see the effects of the diabolical, it is precisely in this almost pious suggestion. The antidote to this enticement is to recall that every temptation resisted is a great act of worship of God. To put up with temptation and not seek the easy way out is a powerful acknowledgment of the sovereignty of God and of Christ, our lawgiver and king. Resisting temptation means seeking first the kingdom of God. Even if one falls later on, he has accomplished an act of obedient worship that will not be erased." (page 90 of The Courage to Be Chaste by Fr. Benedict Groeschel)

Hotel Rwanda

Last night I was glad to be able to see a movie I heard good reviews about: Hotel Rwanda. The story is about the Rwandan genocide of 1994 (that killed at least 500,000 innocent people) and one Hotel manager's struggle to save the lives of his family and people that have fled to his four-star Hotel for safety from the brutal killings. The movie possesses excellent acting, and although it is not "enjoyable" to watch, it is a movie many people should see. The thing that was so striking in this movie to me was to see how powerful countries (including America) that although they knew this stuff was going on did nothing to prevent the mass killings---at least not until there were hundreds of thousands dead. I encourage you to watch this movie if you haven't already seen it, and to do what you can to prevent injustice to life!

Entertainment: 4 stars (Although not exactly "entertaining", it was certainly captivating)
Sexual content: Some immodest dress and exposure though not focused on.

Violent content: Quite grusome (consider what this film is about), but quite restrained compared to many graphic movies today. There is plently of violence seen (though not gory), people screeming, intense moments, and disturbing images. 3 stars
Language content: 1 "F" word, about 6 "S" words and God's name is abused a couple of times. 2.5 stars

Other immoral content: Not any that is uplifted (except perhaps too much drinking). 4.5 stars

I've Been Enrolled...

Actually, not in the army of the United States, but I was just recently enrolled in the Brown Scapular! I've written a post on the Scapular earlier, however I had not been enrolled before. My priest graciously heard my confession, and then led a ceremony enrolling me in this wonderful devotion. My commitment is that I must recite the Divine Office daily---namely, I'll be doing morning, evening, and night prayers from the Christian Prayer book I have. I definitely urge all of you to become apart of this devotion if you are not already. What a wonderful way to prepare for death and for the Lord's coming! Below I'm going to give you some instruction I received when I got my scapular. It is called "The Rule of St. Benedict (For Daily Living)". As you may know, the St. Benedict medal is on many scapulars (mine is no exception) and the rule of St. Benedict should be observed by every Christian in my mind. Read for yourself and I think you'll see why. I know I have a lot of these to work on!

It is written: Do all things with counsel, and thy deeds shall not bring thee repentance.

In the first place, to love the Lord God with all one's heart, all one's soul and all one's strength.

Then one's neighbor as oneself.

Then not to kill. Not to commit adultery. Not to steal.

Not to covet. Not to bear false witness. To honour all men.

Not to do to another what one would not have done to oneself.

To deny oneself, in order to follow Christ.

To chastise the body. Not to seek soft living. To love fasting.

To relieve the poor. To clothe the naked. To visit the sick.

Not to speak vain words or such as move to laughter.

To listen gladly to holy reading.

To apply oneself frequently to prayer.

Daily in one's prayer, with tears and sighs, to confess one's past sins to God. To amend those sins for the future.

Not to fulfill the desires of the the flesh. To hate one's own will.

not to wish to be called holy before one is holy, but first to be holy, that one may more truly be called so.

To fulfil God's commandments daily in one's deeds.

To love chastity. To hate no man.

Not to be jealous. Not to give way to envy.

Not to love contention, (conflict). To shun vainglory, (boastfulness).

To reverence the old. To love the young.

To pray for one's enemies in the love of Christ.

To make peace with one's adversary before sundown.

And never despair of God's mercy.

Christian Terrorists?

The New York Times recently published an interesting article (found here) about certain religious books (including many Christian books) that are being banned from some prison libraries because the "Bureau of Prisons" wants to prevent "recruiting grounds for militant Islamic and other religious groups." Okay, I understand the idea being careful in watching what Islamic material is going in there. Islam is a religion that believes in violence. I know I may be "politically incorrect" by saying that (which I am happy to be) but that is just the way it is. For those people who have studied Islam a little they can find that out pretty easily.

However, what about Christianity (and Judaism for that matter)? Why is Christianity being considered dangerous? If Christ was in our culture there probably wouldn't be so many people in prison anyway and there would be a heck of a lot more peace. Likely the 9/11 tragedy wouldn't have occurred if our Nation was a Godly one. However, the Enemy (you know who I'm talking about?) is triumphing here even more by placing limits on religion in our Country. The First Amendment in America guarantees freedom of religion. How could this be called freedom? Our nation is so obsessed with "separation of Church and State" (which is just horse turd to begin with) and yet I find this so ironic. Here the state is determining how the Church is to act here, but yet if the Church DARE step in one inch in State affairs that will not be tolerated.

And we think we live in a free country?
