Colorado Voting issues 2006I am writing here in summary two Amendments and one Referendum that effect our Catholic Faith. Please read these carefully, but remember, as Catholics there is no gray area as to what to vote for on these three issues.
Amendment 43: Defines marriage in Colorado as a union between one man and one woman. This would stop so called "marriages" between same-sex couples. Voting YES on Amendment 43 is the Catholic position.
Amendment 44: Makes legal the possession of 1 ounce or less of marijuana for anyone 21 & up. Marijuana is a drug that always leads one to intoxication. The argument is that marijuana is safer than alcohol, and therefore should be legal in some instances. However, when one is drinking beer, you do not have to become intoxicated. Intoxication is clearly condemned in the Bible. Although drunkenness with alcohol may be more dangerous than intoxication with marijuana, marijuana is always wrong, while alcohol can be used without abuse. Voting NO on Amendment 44 is the Catholic position.
Referendum I: Allows legal "Domestic partnerships" (Same-sex relationships) in the state of Colorado to have the same rights as marriage. All that is happening here is that this would allow same -sex couples to have marriage without calling it that. The commercials that have been running on TV have been misleading, but it is clearly an agenda for the same-sex movement going on here. Voting NO on Referendum I would be the Catholic position.
Please realize to be in communion with the Catholic Church requires one to believe in ALL that the Catholic Church teaches to be revealed by God. To not vote in line with the Catholic Church would be serious matter, and considered a mortal sin if followed with the 3 normal conditions. However, it is our duty to make a voice as Catholics! Please go and vote, and don't let the Devil take over our Country!

What type of rationalization do you use to state that alcohol can be used without abuse while Marijuana can not? Both are an intoxicating substance and BOTH can be used without any pattern of abuse.
The Catholic's are hypocrites who wish to sit around and drink their booze but don't wish to grant the same rights to those who feel that alcohol consumption is a sin.

Catholics are not hypocrites. We want to see all sin eliminated. We do not want to take part in sin while condemning another for the same sin. That is not how a true Catholic is.

I am afraid we are on different terms of the word "abuse". I am not sure of what your definition is, but mine is that of any intoxication of the mind is drug abuse. Marijuana no matter what will lead one into the intoxication of the mind. Alcohol does not always lead one into an intoxicated state. Catholics believe that to become intoxicated with alcohol or with marijuana or with any other drug is a mortal sin. A mortal sin is a sin that cuts one off from grace with God, therefore not allowing one to enter Heaven. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God."
I hope you noticed the word "drunkards". That drunkenness would refer to any intoxication. So my point is that although alcohol can be taken without leading one into intoxication, marijuana cannot. Therefore, marijuana is always wrong.
As far as your comment about Catholics being hypocrites, I am not sure as to what you mean. As I have just said, Alcohol abuse is just as bad or worse than marijuana, however alcohol itself can be used without abuse, unlike marijuana. A hypocrite is someone who would say something is wrong yet do it himself. I am not saying that true Catholics never sin, but we try our best to combat sin as well as we can. I hope I have clarified your question/comment. If you want to discuss this further, feel free to.
I dont know what kind of amounts you people drink that don't make you intoxicated.
I had me a small margarita tonight, and that certainly made me intoxicated.
Or perhaps your definition of intoxication is a lot different than mine. But, I find it very hard to believe that anyone would drink anything containing alcohol for any other reason than for the intoxicating effect. Perhaps you are just in some sort of weird denial.

According to York University in Toronto Canada, on their website (http://www.yorku.ca/scld/healthed/healthtopics/alcohol_awareness.html#howmuch), your body can process one standard alcoholic drink per hour. Standard being:
"Beer – 12 oz (one bottle….not one pint)
Wine – 5 oz (a very small glass….not a goblet)
Hard liquor – 1oz (one shot glass….not overflowing) "
However, many things factor into the effect of alcohol including:
Weight, gender, amount of alcohol, medication, amount of food consumed, mood, and rate of consumption.
People for hundreds of years have been drinking beer and wine and although drunkenness unfortunately has been common, it is not always the case. My dad for example drinks beer quite regularly, but he is in no way an alcoholic. I have never seen him in an intoxicated state. I know many Catholic men who drink beer and yet do not abuse it. They do not drink it to become drunk. Although it may lift your mood, that does not make you drunk.
I also believe that generally margaritas are high in alcohol, and that may be the reason you had that problem. Marijuana will almost immediately put you in a state of defined intoxication- always. Beer, your liver can handle in certain amounts. I believe that is pretty scientifically proven. Have I made this any more clear? God Bless!
